I thought the issue of laptop and other portable device search and seizure was bad enough at customs between the United States and Europe. Then I read that it was spreading to Canada as well. This type of restrictive copyright based search and seizure practice is like the RIAA and MPAA’s wet dream, and more than just an expensive headache for many travelers.

Want to switch carriers for a better deal but can’t because of the Early Termination Fees? Well AT&T has put a plan in place that will allow someone to terminate their plan early. It isn’t much of a break but they hope it will keep Congress or the Courts from imposing a different plan.

It seems like the computing community is just waiting for Microsoft to step forward and admit the mistakes made with Vista, but in a recent interview with CNET, a high-ranking Microsoft chief continued Microsoft’s distasteful trend of corporate double-speak and PR fluff. What will it take for Microsoft to change its direction as a software company and of refusing to listen to consumers and the media?

Linux has some good things going for it like a dedicated developer community and a focus on improving energy and system efficiencies. Apparently recognizing the value in taking the Linux approach, Via Technologies just announced that it’s releasing the design of a low cost laptop under an open source hardware license.

For quite a while now, consumers have spoke out on forums, blogs, and even consumer protection groups regarding Dell’s less than ethical business practices…in fact sometimes, Dell has been downright shady. Finally consumers will get some satisfaction, as a New York court found Dell guilty of engaging in all the bad business practices that have adversely affected its consumers for so long.

The Sims have needed an upgrade to their living environment for some time. I used to play the Sims 2 on my MacBook Pro; I found the majority of the home decorating furniture to be underwhelming.

Microsoft is saying that Windows 7 is a major release that will build on the technologies already present in Vista. As far as hardware requirements, Windows 7 will have similar or even slightly lower requirements than Vista.

Is this a case of sacrificing one offspring over another? It sure seems that way, with Microsoft pointing out XP’s flaws in order to make Vista look light years better. However, some believe these XP “flaws” are actually inaccurate.

Remember that cool concept Bill Gates himself made a big deal two years ago during Vista’s big push, called Xbox Live Anywhere? Most people assumed Anywhere-became-vaporware, with very little news or update released at all for sometime now.

Apple’s patents always generate a lot of buzz, and for good reason. Whether the folks at Apple are busy patenting the shape of the iPod, right down to the click wheel, to prevent anyone else from making a similar device or some small facet of a larger design, the company’s patent list is a good indicator of the direction new devices are taking.

We all know that solar panels are for collecting the sun’s energy either for heating water or storing energy, but what if those solar panels could also provide shelter? Well, two different initiatives are doing just that. Solar Groves are providing shade for parking lots and providing power for lighting while Solar Veils will provide shade for school children while providing energy and learning.
